[Book Review] Claire Lomas: Finding My Feet

Hello!

I have just finished reading Claire Lomas' book and simply had to share my thoughts of it with you! I am sure that many of you know who Claire Lomas is, but for those of you who might not here is a brief background:

Claire Lomas was previously an eventer with aims to make it to the top, even competing at Burghley one year. She is actually local to me and even went to the same secondary school as I. In 2007, Claire had an unfortunate fall at Osberton Horse Trials which paralysed her. However, since the accident, Claire has gone on to complete the London marathon in a robotic suit as well as do a cycle event.

I have been fortunate to cycle with Claire twice through university and she is truly inspirational. I don't know why it took me so long to get round to buying her book but I definitely recommend everyone to give it a read! Claire hand-wrote the book herself as well as publishing it herself which I believe makes it all that more personal and inspirational.

I don't want to ruin the book for anyone who hasn't read it, but I found it really insightful as to how people react to those who have spinal injuries. I was shocked at how pessimistic people could be to those who have hope as in my opinion, surely those who have hope should be encouraged and help those who are the opposite. Having a spinal injury is such a drastic life change, and hearing someone's experience about the lack of rehab they were offered and the lack of support really surprised me!

As mentioned, I really don't want to give too much away but I would definitely recommend everyone and anyone to read this, whether you're from an equestrian background or not! Claire is so inspirational and I am definitely more inspired to try and do more things for charity!

Thanks for reading,
Laura xx
